This red coat is by Desigual, a Spanish brand I first encountered on a trip to Barcelona. Desigual was also one of the most fun fashion shows of New York Fashion Week this season, with bright, punchy hues and models who actually, wait for it, smiled.

It was finally cool enough outside to wear a coat on a trip to Venice Beach the other night to preview the La Mer collections at Gjelina, and I felt a little like Little Red Riding Hood prancing around Abbott Kinney.

As for what’s under the coat, my go-to combo for fall has been a cashmere sweater worn over a dress. I wear this sweater every other day. A simple cashmere sweater is worth it.
