Happy Friyay! Before we ride off into the sunset of the weekend, I wanted to share a few snaps from last night’s Donald Robertson, aka Drawbertson, event with Smashbox. And give you the scoop on where you can snag some of his art + meet the Instagram superstar in person!

After following Drawbertson on Instagram and becoming huge fans of his fashion illustrations and spirited sketches, it was a thrill for Dee and me to meet the man himself last night. And to hear his story.

 He was one of the three founders of M.A.C. cosmetics. After they were acquired by Lauder, he went on to be a creative director at Conde Nast and Hearst, helping to launch American Marie Claire. He then returned to Estee Lauder, working as a creative director for some of the world’s largest cosmetics brands such as Bobbi Brown.

 But it was more of a happy accident how he became a cult sensation as a fashion illustrator.

He had been at Bobbi Brown, a brand that is more conservative with their creative, and it wasn’t until he had sketched something as part of a work project, that his sketches got noticed for the first time and this venture as an artist began.

And then, Instagram.

 Sharing sketches of fashion’s elite, as well as photos of his adorable twin baby boys (who just snagged their own Ralph Lauren campaign btdubs), soon everyone began to take notice of the father of five.

It wasn’t long before he was doing collaborations and exhibitions with everyone from J.Crew to Colette. Now he is THE artist everyone wants to collaborate with.

“I LOVE social media,” Donald told me last night. It’s no wonder why.

It also goes to show that as long as you keep being creative and doing good work that eventually amazing, surprising things you never could have even dreamed might happen.  Sometimes that’s hard as a creative, when you are constantly comparing yourself to others and their success — wondering Where is this all leading? — but keep on keepin’ on. Thanks for the inspiration Donald!
