I’m excited to share another room makeover with you! Behold our kid-friendly guest room designed by Joy Cho of Oh Joy! for The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House, presented by Traditional Home. It’s just as colorful, whimsical and full of joy as you would expect from Joy. But you won’t believe the before…
We have two guest rooms in the house, and this is the smaller of the two.
We wanted it to be kid-friendly for when our nieces and nephew visit (or friends with kids), but adult-friendly too, for when we have both rooms occupied by adult visitors at the same time. Or, when my parents visit and my Dad’s snoring chases my poor Mom to another room. 😉
Before we continue on with the pretty pictures, I should show you the before. BRACE YOURSELVES! SHIELD YOUR CHILDREN! SHIELD YOUR EYES!
YES, this dark cave is what Joy, who emits light, was charged with.
Thank god she’s not only a dear friend, but also one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.
Where others may have flinched seeing this dark room, Joy knew what she was going to do right away to add her bright, colorful, whimsical signature style.
Thank goodness, because this room needed it! Oh Joy! to the rescue!
First, it was literally brightened up by adding a huge window to the front wall. It also got a sliding door on the side wall, both by Fenessco. Those two things alone made a HUGE difference.
The other big change which had a huge impact was the flooring. The ugly brown carpet was ripped up and replaced with this Crossville flooring, in a soothing shade of pale grey.
Now, for all of those amazing Oh Joy! signature details…can you believe almost everything is from Target?
For a surprise inside of the closet, Joy created this custom wallpaper using Spoonflower in the same print she used on the bench. I could not love it more! She styled the closet with colorful vintage suitcases and Trina Turk clothing.
The walls got a fresh coat of Dunn Edwards white paint in Whisper. To add some visual interest to them, without it being overbearing, Joy added these darling DIY gold dots. Also adding major visual interest, that jaw-dropping Kelly Wearstler strada light for Visual Comfort via Ferguson Showrooms. You’ve got to mix some high with low for a dynamic effect and this was the place to do it.
Those darling pom-pom curtains? Also a fun DIY!
This room wasn’t just a huge hit with the thousands of people who came through to view it for Modernism Week, it also won over the heart of Kaylee Golightly, who has officially claimed it as her room. 😉
Can you blame her?
A big YAY indeed for this amazing transformation.
Thank you so much Joy for making it an airy wonderland for kids and kids at heart!
What do you think? Do you love this space as much as Kaylee and I do?
