Golden Globes Anne Hatahway

Holy wow. The Golden Globes red carpet was one jaw-dropping surprise after the next, so playing favorites proved trickier than usual. But winners must be chosen, so the criteria for Best Dressed? Those who wowed, those who surprised and those who made heads turn twice. Anne Hathaway certainly did all three in this body-loving long-sleeved back-baring gown by Giorgio Armani. The ode to the ’70s is no surprise as her stylist is none other than the disco-loving Rachel Zoe (in fact, can’t you see Zoe wearing this number herself?). What is a surprise is the new trend of long-sleeved gowns, which we’ll surely be seeing in stores (and no doubt, bridal salons) come spring.

Also indulging in the new long-sleeved dress trend? Angelina Jolie and Leighton Meester. Jolie’s emerald Versace gown proved that one need not show a lot of skin to make a statement and, after many a trial and woeful error on the red carpet, Leighton Meester finally nailed a look that works for her instead of against her in this Burberry gown.

Olivia Wilde and Catherine Zeta-Jones didn’t shy away from glamour in their princess frocks. Wilde wowed in a sparkly chocolate Marchesa frock (and had us wondering if she might be Kelly Wearstler’s long lost twin), while Zeta-Jones stunned in an emerald green Monique Lhuillier (emerald green being one of the biggest trends of the night).

Golden Globes Lea Michelle; Golden Globes January Jones

Another big — and refreshingly lovely — trend? Valentine hues. Lea Michelle’s ruffled yet refined pink Oscar de la Renta gown turned heads and January Jones’ fiery red Versace stopped men, women and birds dead in their tracks (finally explaining that whole birds falling from the sky thing and proving, once again, that she’s a total Betty) .

Also embracing pink and red was glowing mom-to-be Natalie Portman in a flowing flower-embellished Viktor & Rolf number. Claire Danes indulged her girly side in neon pink, but favored Calvin Klein’s chic simplicity over florals and frills.

Golden Globes Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit

While we saw new silhouettes and new hues, we also spotted a few new faces, too. Our favorite? The practically unrecognizable scene-stealing Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit. The fresh-faced 14-year-old chose a sophisticated yet age-appropriate cream Prabal Gurung gown and completely charmed us. How about you?
