Sophisticated. Stylish. Southern. Not three words that often pop to mind together. But that’s exactly what we found Savannah to be — not to mention charming and beautiful. We only had a day and a half to explore, which caused the Savannah skies to cry, naturally (i.e. it was raining — sideways), so we saved the beaches for another time.

A design-minded friend, the brilliant Rena Tom of Rare Device, suggested Papillote for a yummy casual lunch on Broughton Street.

It was fresh, french and fabulous, with brioche to die for, and macarons compliments of the chef (merci!).

After a looong nap (three days at Disney World had both The Huz and me under the weather), we tried to heal ourselves with southern cooking at Paula Deen’s restaurant The Lady and Sons. I have three words for ya’ll: buttah, buttah, buttah. The buffet was basically Thanksgiving on a plate — I thought it was pretty good, the hubby was overwhelmed by the butter and salt content. All I know is that after a swig of Grand Marnier (in place of Nyquil), I felt much better. Was it the hoecakes ya’ll or the GrandMa? The mystery lives on…

The next day, we got to check out one of my favorite online shops in person, shopSCAD, where we scoped out handmade goodies designed by students and alumni of the the Savannah College of Art and Design.

We were pleasantly surprised to see a book by an old friend and coworker on the shelves, too.

We followed up our shopping with tea and reminiscing at Gryphon Tea Room, taking in not only delectable treats and design (love those bright orange chairs), but the fabulous style of the Savannah crowd (understated panache, anyone? Methinks The Sartorialist needs to make this his next destination, as the gentlemen really had style in this town).

We didn’t have time for more shopping, dining and sightseeing on this trip, but would love to go back in the spring and have already ordered Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and will be hitting up some of the spots on Design*Sponge’s great Savannah City Guide.
Have you been to this southern gem? Are you bananas for Savannah too?
